Itri and its Medieval castle |
Itri, with its Medieval castle and the historic heritage of Fra' Diavolo, surrounded by the olive trees which produce the far-famed “oliva di Gaeta”.
Itri is a historic Italian village located in the center of Italy. The most ancient part of the town is called St. Angelo. It was formerly known as La Tarita and it is located on the top of a hill. A net of narrow paved alleys leads up to the magnificent Medieval Castle. The main building and several towers survived the bombardment during the World War II. The most recent part of the town is located in the valley beneath St. Angelo along the river Pontone.
A bronze plaque on the stairs to the Piazzarella reminds the story of Fra' Diavolo. He was a famous Neapolitan guerrilla leader who resisted the French occupation of Naples. He was almost captured by the French when fighting in an army incursion in 1798. The legend says that he escaped by donning peasant dress and burrowed in a secluded shelter right beneath the Piazzarella.
Itri is surrounded by hills covered with olive trees. The olives represent a distinctive trait of the local culture. They are usually named Olive di Gaeta and have a peculiar taste and superior quality. The flavor of the oil is bitter, fruity, round, and persistent. The color is green and bright.
The devotion to the Madonna della Civita is part of the history of Itri. She is the patron saint of the town. Her feast is celebrated on July 21. It is called Infiorata and the alleys are covered with flowers resembling images of the Holy Virgin. The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Civita is located on the mountain in front of Itri.
