Motovun is an historic village in Istria surrounded by Teran vineyards and a forest rich in truffles. A legend tells about Veli Jože, a good gentle giant….

Motovun is a tiny medieval village in central part of Istria, Croatia. Istria is compared to Tuscany because of many hillside villages with houses scattered all over the hill. Motovun belonged to the Bishop of Poreč in the 10th and 11th centuries. It was then taken over by Venice in 1278. Venetians surrounded the village by solid walls which last until today. Many other architectural elements of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles were built in the following centuries.

Motovun is surrounded by vineyards where the Teran and the Malvazija are produced. Malvasia, a white wine, and Teran, a red wine, are considered the finest Istrian wines. They have a recognized traditional denomination. Teran is a member of the Refosco family of grape varieties, which also includes Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso. Traditional Kraški Teran does not age well and should be consumed within its first year. Kraški Teran is traditionally served with pršut (prosciutto) and other pork dishes like sausages, pancetta, or cooked ham with horseradish.

The river Mirna flows below the hill and on the other side of the river there is the famous Motovun forest. Motovun Forest is especially rich in truffles, the underground tasty aphrodisiac mushrooms. Specially trained dogs need to be used to discover truffles as they grow underground. The season of Istrian truffles lasts from September to December. Starting the first week of October until mid November, there are fairs every week-end where local artisans sell wines, cheese, and fresh truffles.

Motovun is also known as the city of Veli Jože (Big Joe.) According to the legend, giants used to live in the valley of the River Mirna. Motovun was one of the towns built by the giants, who disappeared when Istria was colonized by ordinary people. Veli Jože, the good gentle giant, represents the Croatian people of Istria.
