Brembo's crystalline water spurting out of a frozen waterfall.

Brembo spring at the Devil’s feet

Brembo's crystalline water spurting out of a frozen waterfall. It's hard to believe that something so pure can spring right at the Devil's feet…

The river Brembo has four main branches. The main spring is located in the Orobic Alps, right below a mountain called Pizzo del Diavolo di Tenda (Devil’s peak.) Being around 3000m high, the spring is almost frozen even in the summer. In a plateau located a few hundred meters below, a natural basin collects pure water creating a small lake called Lago del Diavolo (Devil’s lake). The Brembo then flows down in the valley named Val Brembana.

Despite its scary name, Pizzo del Diavolo (Devil’s peak) is one of the most fascinating and beloved mountains in the province of Bergamo. It is 2914m high. A smaller mountain, called Diavolino (Little Devil) is connected to it by the South ridge. Pizzo del Diavolo and the Brembo spring are at about 3 hours hiking from the closest mountain hut.

It’s hard to believe that about 220 million years ago Val Brembana was covered by the sea. The sea was not very deep, but rather warm and salty. The indented coast hosted areas of lush vegetation very similar to the coral reefs we have today in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Dead fishes and reptiles sunk on the bottom of the sea can be seen today fossilized in the broken stones along the paths in the valley.

The spring

The river Brembo has four main branches. The main spring is located in the Orobic Alps, right below a mountain called Pizzo del Diavolo di Tenda (Devil’s peak.) Being around 3000m high, the spring is almost frozen even in the summer. In a plateau located a few hundred meters below, a natural basin collects pure water creating a small lake called Lago del Diavolo (Devil’s lake). The Brembo then flows down in the valley named Val Brembana.

Pizzo del Diavolo and Diavolino

Despite its scary name, Pizzo del Diavolo (Devil’s peak) is one of the most fascinating and beloved mountains in the province of Bergamo. It is 2914m high. A smaller mountain, called Diavolino (Little Devil) is connected to it by the South ridge. Pizzo del Diavolo and the Brembo spring are at about 3 hours hiking from the closest mountain hut.

Val Brembana

It’s hard to believe that about 220 million years ago Val Brembana was covered by the sea. The sea was not very deep, but rather warm and salty. The indented coast hosted areas of lush vegetation very similar to the coral reefs we have today in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Dead fishes and reptiles sunk on the bottom of the sea can be seen today fossilized in the broken stones along the paths in the valley.
